Speculation about who the Sun, owned by Rupert Murdoch, would back has been rife since Rishi Sunak called for a general election on May 22. An editorial that day described the decision to call early elections as a “big gamble.”

But less than 24 hours before the polls opened, the Sun replaced the main story on its website with a front-page story showing the front page of its newspaper with a picture of a soccer pitch in the background, a small picture of England manager Gareth Southgate and the headline: “As Britain goes to the polls … it’s time for a new manager (we’re not saying sack Southgate).”

The Labor leader welcomed the Sun’s turnaround. “I’m delighted to have The Sun’s endorsement; it shows how much our party has changed. It’s going back to serving working people, and that’s the change on offer in tomorrow’s election,” Starmer said.
