France’s state railway company SNCF said the disruption affected its Atlantic, North and East high-speed lines, damaging some of its facilities. SNCF said one of the actions was “blocked”.
SNCF said travel on those lines was “severely disrupted”, and the rail network had to divert and cancel numerous trains. Team members were on site to oversee repairs, and the situation was expected to last throughout the weekend.
The statement said, “We ask all passengers to postpone their journeys and not to go to the station.”
Rémi Train Centre Val de Loire also said train lines would be disrupted until at least Monday, while a fire near the tracks in Courtalain, in northern France, disrupted travel to Paris.
The disruptions came hours before the Olympic torch relay was due to end and the Opening Ceremony was due to begin.
CNN has reached out to the International Olympic Committee for comment.
French Minister of Sport, Olympics and Paralympics Amélie Oudéa-Castera said the disruptions to train lines were “a form of coordinated sabotage.”
Speaking to CNN affiliate BFMTV, Oudéa-Castera condemned the attacks “in the strongest possible terms,” calling them “truly appalling.”
“Playing against the Games is playing against France, against your camp, against your country,” she said, according to BFMTV.
Oudéa-Castera said the incidents would disrupt travel on Friday and into the weekend. “We will assess the impact on passengers and athletes and ensure that all delegations are transported appropriately to the competition venues,” he said.
