UNRWA Commissioner-General Lazzarini stated that, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), six cases of type 2 polio have been detected in some areas of Gaza.
Lazzarini noted that no cases of paralysis have been identified yet: “This is another serious development in the never-ending journey of misery. Polio emerges due to a collapsing health system, lack of clean water and hygiene materials, overcrowded shelters, and very poor sanitation”.
Lazzarini pointed out that the level of vaccination among children has dropped from nearly universal to just over 85%, as people are constantly on the move. He emphasized: “Diseases do not discriminate between people. They know no borders and do not need visas or permits to travel. The spread of polio in Gaza and beyond can be controlled by vaccination campaigns reaching every child, wherever they are. A ceasefire and increased flow of vaccines will allow this”.
